Some Basic Skimboarding Tricks

Skimboarding is rapidly gaining popularity today. It is a water sport similar to surfing, only a lot easier and less risky to learn. This sport is safe for teenagers and adults alike. Once you get to know how to balance on the board and slide on the waves, you know how to skimboard.

But simply running and gliding may become too dull or boring, and you may want to learn to execute some fancy moves on your board. Once you get used to skimboarding and you start to notice that you rarely fall off, it can be a sign that you are ready to learn some basic skimboarding tricks to impress your friends and other people watching you skimboard. Here are some easy to learn skimboarding tricks:

  • The 360 Spin - This is the easiest trick to master. To do this trick, you must be near the sand, in shallow water. Simply drag your hand on the sand and bend slightly to that side. When doing this trick, make sure you are not near rocky parts or any place that can cause you injury when spinning. Spinning is quite difficult to control and you may fall off many times before you master it.
  • The Ollie - This trick is borrowed from skateboarding. To do this, simply glide on your board. Once you get a stable gliding speed, push the rear end of your board down with your leg and lift your other leg up. Doing this makes your board jump slightly while moving forward.
  • The "Coffin" - This is a fun and very exciting trick to do. First, get on your board and slide along the waves. Once you get a steady speed, slowly squat and hold both sides of your board. Sit on it at the center and start to lie down on your back with both of your arms at your side. The trick here is to execute the sequence fast that you get most of the time sliding on your board lying down. This can be a very exciting and scary trick to do especially when there are a lot of waves heading in your direction.
  • "Shuvit" - Yet another trick borrowed from skateboarding. Basically, the goal of this trick is to let the board spin 180 degrees either clockwise or counter-clockwise. To do this trick, get sliding on the board and slightly jump, having one leg push inward, and the other pushing outward at the same time. Doing this will spin the board. Making the board spin 360 degrees is called a 360 shuvit.
  • The Fire Hydrant - This trick is also a simple but it can be tricky to execute. Simply slide on your board, then grab the front end of your board and raise one leg. Try as long as you can to balance in that position. It is called the fire hydrant because you will look like a dog urinating on a fire hydrant.
