Skimboards today are made of fiberglass, carbon fiber or wood. As a starter, it is much better if you start with wooden skimboards since they are cheaper and easier to make. Here is a simple guide to making your own skimboard.
First, you must get a pattern of a skimboard. You can either borrow your friend's skimboard or purchase one. Trace the outline of the board on paper or simply write down the specifications, like its length, width and thickness. Once you get a pattern for your skimboard, head to your local hardware store and buy the wood you will need for making your board.
The best and most affordable type of wood you can use is plywood. There are several types of plywood; the wood you choose must be sturdy enough but not too heavy. Usually, the best type of plywood is the most expensive. Buy wood in large enough dimensions to make one whole skimboard.
After buying the sheet of plywood, start tracing your template onto the wood using a pencil or any marker of your choice. Then start cutting it out using a skill saw. If you do not have a circular saw to do this, you can buy one or have it cut out at the hardware store. Most hardware stores are more than willing to cut out the wood for you, especially if you bought your wood from them.
When you finish cutting your board, smooth out the edges, using a router or sandpaper. Make the edges as round as possible. After you smooth the edges, focus your attention on both sides of the board. Sand it using fine sand paper and make sure it is really smooth.
Use waterproof lacquer to coat the wood, so that it is protected from the damaging effects of water. It is best if you apply at least three coats. After each coat, let it dry then sand the surface again before applying another coat. When it is done, head out to the beach and give your new board a test drive.
