A Short Introduction to Skimboarding

When talking about water sports, the first thing that comes to mind is surfing. However, there is a sport, fast becoming popular, that is similar to surfing.

This water sport is called skimboarding. It is a sport akin to surfing, the only differences being in the location and the equipment. Skimboarding is done near the shore and uses a smaller board. Unlike surfing, skimboarding can be enjoyed by people of all ages because it is easy to learn and is fun to do.

Skimboarding has a very colorful history. The sport evolved from a simple competitive sport among lifeguards about 60 years ago. Lifeguards at the Laguna Beach played this sport using only small pieces of wood as their board. Today skimboarding is a serious sport that a lot of people engage in. There are quite a number of skimboarders today who are taking the sport to the professional level.

To be able to skimboard, you first must have a board. You must choose a board based on your experience level and your weight. Traditional and cheaper skimboards are made of wood but are not very durable. Modern boards are made of either fiberglass or carbon fiber, both lightweight and very durable materials.

Wax is applied on the top surface of the board to prevent your feet from slipping off the board. Wax repels the water and makes the board easier to balance on and to control.

Getting on the board is a very important part of skimboarding. Here is how to get on a board and start skimboarding:

  • Wait by the shore for a wave. When one comes up, run towards it while holding your board.
  • When you reach the wet sand, drop the board, but do not throw it. Jump on top of the board.
  • When done properly, you and the board will slide.
  • To maintain balance and achieve a longer slide, lower your center of gravity by bending your knees while staying at the center of your board.

You may experience a lot of falls until you get the hang of balancing on the board and sliding with the waves. Remember, practice makes perfect.
